The road to Wild Grass leaves the busier parts of Sigiriya behind. By the time you arrive, the landscape has taken over.

There are no hotel corridors here, and no rows of rooms. Villas appear individually among trees, beside water and at the end of winding paths. Some have their own private pools. All have been given enough space to feel properly private.

Peacocks wander through the grounds. Monkeys move through the trees. Birds provide much of the background noise. The landscape has been allowed to remain reassuringly wild in places.

And yet some of Sri Lanka's most remarkable places are close by. Sigiriya Rock Fortress and Pidurangala rise from the plains nearby, while Dambulla Cave Temple lies in the other direction.

Wild Grass puts you close to all of them, without making you feel particularly close to anything.
