THE GOLDEN TEMPLE
Five caves,
centuries of history.
Dambulla's cave temples have developed over more than two thousand years, with successive generations adding statues, paintings and places of worship within the natural rock shelters.

Today, five principal caves form the heart of the temple complex. Inside, painted ceilings and rock surfaces surround an extraordinary collection of Buddha images, alongside figures associated with Sri Lankan kings and Buddhist history.

INSIDE THE CAVES
A temple shaped by the rock.
The temple is built into a long overhanging rock face, with individual cave chambers opening from the terrace below. Each has its own character, from smaller devotional spaces to larger chambers filled with rows of Buddha figures.
Much of the impact comes from the relationship between art and geology. Paintings extend across ceilings and uneven rock surfaces, while statues sit within spaces formed by the natural contours of the caves.

WHEN TO GO
When should you visit Dambulla?
Earlier in the day
Visiting earlier in the day generally means cooler conditions for the walk up to the temple. Once inside the caves, the atmosphere is naturally more sheltered from the heat outside.
Later in the day
A later visit can also work well, particularly if Dambulla forms part of a wider day exploring the Cultural Triangle. Leave enough time to walk up, explore the caves without rushing and return before closing.
ALLOW TIME FOR THE WALK UP · REMOVE SHOES BEFORE ENTERING · DRESS RESPECTFULLY
THE CLIMB
There's a climb to the caves.
Reaching the temple involves walking uphill and climbing steps from the entrance area. Comfortable footwear is useful for the approach, particularly in warmer weather. The incline is gradual, so this isn't a particularly difficult climb.
WHAT TO WEAR?
Dress for a place of worship.
Dambulla remains an active Buddhist temple. Clothing should cover the shoulders and knees, and shoes must be removed before entering the cave temples.
INSIDE
Take your time.
The five principal caves contain hundreds of statues and extensive painted surfaces. Moving slowly through them makes it much easier to notice how the spaces, sculptures and paintings differ from one cave to the next.
