ELEPHANTS OF THE CULTURAL TRIANGLE

Where the elephants move.

The national parks and protected landscapes around Sigiriya form part of a much larger habitat used by Sri Lanka's wild elephants. Herds move through this landscape throughout the year, responding to rainfall, water and the availability of food.

That means there isn't one park that is always best for an elephant safari. Depending on recent movements and local conditions, your safari may take you to Minneriya, Kaudulla or another suitable area nearby, giving you the best opportunity to encounter elephants in their natural environment.

YOUR SAFARI

Following the elephants.

Your safari begins with a journey from Wild Grass to the national park offering the best conditions for elephant sightings that day. From there, you head into the landscape by private jeep.

Rather than following a fixed park throughout the year, the destination can change according to recent elephant movements and local conditions. This allows the experience to follow the wildlife as closely as possible, whether the elephants are gathering around open grasslands, forest edges or water.

WHEN TO GO

When is the best time for an elephant safari?

Early morning

Morning safaris can offer cooler conditions and softer light, with the landscape becoming active as the day begins.

Late afternoon

Afternoon safaris are often rewarding as temperatures begin to fall and elephants move through feeding areas and towards water.

WHAT TO BRING

Keep the essentials close.

Bring sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat for the more exposed parts of the drive. A camera or binoculars are worth carrying if you have them.

THE JEEP

Expect an open-air drive.

Safaris take place by jeep, travelling on uneven, dusty park roads and tracks. Comfortable, lightweight clothing is usually the most practical choice.

WILDLIFE

Every safari is different.

Elephants are wild and move freely through the landscape, so sightings, herd sizes and locations vary from day to day. Other wildlife and birdlife may also be encountered along the way.
