PIDURANGALA ROCK
Climb for one of Sigiriya's best views.
Rising just north of Sigiriya, Pidurangala combines an ancient Buddhist site, a forested climb and a broad rocky summit with an extraordinary view across to Sigiriya Rock Fortress.

THE OTHER ROCK
A different view of Sigiriya.
Pidurangala rises through the forest just north of Sigiriya, close enough for the two rocks to dominate each other's horizons. The climb begins at an ancient Buddhist temple before following a trail through woodland towards the exposed rock above.

At the summit, the landscape opens in every direction. Sigiriya Rock stands prominently across the forest, while lakes, hills and plains stretch towards the horizon.

THE CLIMB
Forest, rock and a final scramble.
The route begins at Pidurangala's temple before climbing through the forest along a rocky trail. Much of the ascent is straightforward, although the path becomes rougher as you approach the summit.

The final section involves climbing between and over large boulders. It is short, but more physical than the rest of the route and requires some scrambling. Beyond it, the trail emerges onto the broad rock plateau at the summit.

WHEN TO GO
When should you climb Pidurangala?
At sunrise
Sunrise is one of the most popular times to climb Pidurangala. Starting before dawn means making much of the ascent in cooler conditions before watching the landscape emerge into view from the summit.
Later in the day
Pidurangala is worth climbing beyond sunrise too. Later visits allow you to see more of the forest and rocky landscape on the way up, while the summit remains an exceptional viewpoint across Sigiriya and the surrounding countryside.

THE TRAIL
Expect uneven ground.
The route follows a forest trail before becoming increasingly rocky towards the summit. Comfortable shoes with good grip are particularly useful on the upper part of the climb.
THE FINAL SECTION
Be ready to scramble.
Reaching the summit involves a short scramble between large boulders. It is considerably more physical than the earlier sections of the trail and requires reasonable mobility and confidence on uneven rock.
THE TEMPLE
Remember where the climb begins.
The trail passes through an active Buddhist temple at the base of Pidurangala. Dress respectfully for this part of the route and follow any instructions regarding footwear when entering temple areas.
BEFORE YOU CLIMB
A little rougher underfoot.
