Sigiriya Rock Fortress rising above the forest in Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle

SIGIRIYA ROCK FORTRESS

Climb Sri Lanka's ancient rock citadel.

Rising above the plains of Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle, Sigiriya combines an extraordinary landscape with the remains of a fifth-century royal citadel.

THE LION ROCK

A fortress above the forest.

Sigiriya rises almost 200 metres above the surrounding plains, its sheer rock walls visible long before you reach the entrance. At its summit lie the remains of an ancient royal complex, reached through landscaped water gardens, rock gardens, frescoes and the monumental Lion's Paw.

The climb is part archaeology, part landscape. As you move higher, the views open across forests, lakes and distant hills, before reaching the ruins at the summit.

THE CLIMB

What to expect on
the way up.

The route begins relatively gently through Sigiriya's formal water gardens before reaching the base of the rock. From here, the climb becomes steeper, following staircases attached to and cut through the rock.

Along the way, the route passes the famous frescoes and Mirror Wall before reaching the Lion's Paw — the monumental gateway that once formed the entrance to the final ascent. The last section is the steepest, but the summit opens onto the remains of the palace complex and wide views across the surrounding landscape.

WHEN TO GO

When should you climb Sigiriya?

Early morning

Early morning is usually the most comfortable time to climb. Temperatures are lower, the light is softer and starting early gives you more time before the heat builds around the exposed upper sections of the rock.

Late afternoon

Later in the day can also be rewarding, particularly as the light begins to soften across the surrounding landscape. Allow enough time for the climb and your descent before the site closes.

MIDDAY CAN BE HOT · CARRY WATER · WEAR COMFORTABLE FOOTWEAR

HOW LONG?

Allow two to three hours.

Two to three hours is a sensible amount of time for most visits, including the climb, stops along the way and time at the summit. Take longer if you prefer to move slowly or spend more time exploring the archaeological site.

WHAT TO BRING?

Travel light.

Comfortable footwear, drinking water and sun protection are the essentials. Much of the upper climb is exposed, so the heat can become more noticeable as the morning progresses.

IS IT DIFFICULT?

Steep in parts, but manageable

The climb involves around 1,200 steps and several steep staircases. There are places to pause along the route, but visitors should be comfortable with sustained climbing and heights.
